First lecture of the ISO colloquium "Authoritarian turn? Emotions, world views and radicalization"

The ISO cordially invites you to the first lecture of the colloquium "Authoritarian Turn? Emotions, Worldviews and Radicalization".
Under the title "Explosive emotions and multiple crises: Authoritarian dynamics in German agriculture?", Janna Luisa Pieper (Göttingen) will shed light on the emotional and political dynamics that can be observed in the context of the farmers' protests in Germany.
The lecture will take place on:
Wednesday, May 6, 2026
16:00-18:00 c.t.
Room EF 50/0.512
Participation also possible via Zoom
The lecture will focus on the farmers' protests in the winters of 2019/20 and 2023/24, which are understood not only as reactions to agricultural policy decisions, but also as an expression of a long-standing emotional structure within parts of the agricultural sector. Based on an empirical qualitative study, participant observations and current research results on the political orientations of farmers, the lecture asks how ambivalent feelings between self-valorization and resentment are formed.
It will examine the extent to which set pieces of (right-wing) populist narratives can be seen within the protest milieu and how the constitution of a populist movement can emerge from a collective of feelings. Particular attention will be paid to the role of social media, authoritarian polarization entrepreneurs and the eventization of protests.
The Zoom link to the event will be sent on request.
