Obituary for Prof. Dr. Gerhard Naegele

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Naegele, who passed away on 22.04.2026 after a short and serious illness.
Gerhard Naegele was an outstanding scientist and influential representative of German social policy and ageing research, who was closely associated with the Institute of Sociology at the Technical University of Dortmund for many years. As Professor of "Social Gerontology" and as Director of the Institute of Gerontology of the Research Society for Gerontology e. V. for many years, he initiated and decisively influenced the scientific debate on demographic change. His work extended far beyond the university: in research, policy advice and public debate, he worked tirelessly to improve the living conditions of older people and to see ageing as a social opportunity.
In his academic work, Gerhard Naegele was particularly concerned with questions of social security in old age, the world of work in demographic change and the possibilities of active and dignified ageing. His research has always been highly relevant to society, interdisciplinary and practice-oriented. Numerous projects, publications and collaborations in Germany and abroad testify to his great commitment and his scientific and personal foresight.
He was an inspiring mentor to many students and young academics, who knew how to make complex social developments understandable and tangible and to inspire young people for gerontological and socio-political issues. Many of his former colleagues now bear responsibility in science, politics and practice - a lasting sign of his influence.
Those who worked with Gerhard Naegele appreciated not only his high level of professional expertise, but also his innovative ideas and his strong sense of social responsibility. He combined scientific excellence with a human touch, humor and an interest in the realities of other people's lives.
With his death, gerontology has lost a central figure and the university has lost a highly esteemed colleague. His scientific work and his commitment to a solidary, age-appropriate society will continue to have an impact.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, his circle of friends and all his companions.
We will keep Gerhard Naegele in honorable memory.
