Focus on care, inequalities and health

Dr. Giorgio Di Gessa from University College London has been researching at TU Dortmund University since the beginning of the year. The Associate Professor of Statistics and Population Health came to Germany as part of the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and cooperates with Prof. Martina Brandt at the Department of Social Sciences.
Di Gessa will speak about his research on care, inequalities and health at the social science colloquium on April 29, 2026. The English-language lecture will present findings from England and is open to all interested parties.
Di Gessa conducts research at the interface of social, health and life course research. He uses quantitative methods to investigate how social and demographic factors influence healthy ageing. Among other things, he focuses on the question of how gainful employment, voluntary work and informal care are related to physical and mental health in middle and old age.
The Humboldt Foundation's Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award is part of the Federal Government's 1000 Heads Program, which aims to attract top international researchers to collaborate in Germany in the long term.
